Gene; only had one sister, but our financiial situation was very similar.
We were on the edge of the Dust Bowl, combine that with the depression and
things were bad. Dad one time told me that one of the local bankers took
his own life after having to foreclose on so many people. In '38 Dad
switched from mules to a new CC 3 plow Case tractor. He shortened the two
tongues in the 2 row horse drawn corn sled and made a compact pull type two
row sled. The horse drawn sled took every other row, with a pole
connecting the two one-row sleds, and the operator sat on a seat in the
middle between the two sleds. Several years later he picked up a couple
more horse drawn sleds and made a second (standby) sled for pulling behind
the tractor. On our 10' tandem disc harrow, I can remember his getting
used discs from other farmers or from the salvage yard and replacing our
individual disc blades with these because the others were much larger in
diameter. The only implements I remember him buying new were a 10 ft packer
and a JD Vanbrunt 16 - 8 rubber tired grain drill. He was able to finish
paying the mortgage in late '40s. He bought a used Ford in early '50s for
rowcrop and other misc light work. And the old corn sleds were converted
(once again ) to 3pt. I still have (and occasionally use) our Forney stick
welder that Dad bought in late '40s. The most used thing that I made was a
5 x 7 platform for Ford 3pt; it soon became a multi- use implement. It was
great for fixing fence
