Dick, what brand, model and year car/truck are you putting it on. That
might help. Someone might know the specifics.

Dick,

You're overlooking something. The reverse lights are at the back of the car
but they have to get switched somewhere that is convenient. At one time the
RL switch was on the transmission. Now it is probably somewhere on the
steering column under the dash. I your new rig, since it is most likely all
electronic(no mechanical shift linkage) it could be anywhere or even a
sub-circuit off whatever triggers reverse in the transmission. At any rate
there is a wire in there somewhere that either feeds the RL on the vehicle
or triggers a relay which feeds the RL. It is also possible that the RL are
switched on the ground side which would require a relay that would switch
the camera on when it (the relay) was grounded. Not hard to do either way
but the first step is to visit your dealer and ask to look over a wiring
schematic. If you can get your hands on a service manual for a few minutes
you can find out which side of the circuit is getting switched as well as
both the circuit number (will be imprinted on the wire every few inches or
at the connections at the least), the color code of the wires involved and a
"component locator" which will tell you where to look for things. It is
also possible, and very easy to rig one manual switch which will allow the
camera to be triggered manually, automatically, or left off at all times.

Here's a link to a wiring diagram for the switching.
http://www.snowplowing-contractors.com/alan_reverse_lights.html

If the system is switched on the hot side follow the left hand drawing with
the camera wired on the wire(blue) marked "new lights". The camera
shouldn't draw much power so that drawing should work. If the camera
doesn't have it's own supply connection, and does draw all it's power off
the trigger lead it might be best to wire it using the right hand drawing
where the only current added to the RL circuit is the tiny amount used to
trigger the relay.
