Dave,
The Super M has more displacement than the M. SM is 263 CID, M is 247 CID.
Quite a difference in HP too. If he just wants a running tractor, the M engine will work.
As Mike pointed out, the hydraulic pump may not. If it were mine, I would look for a SM
engine, or just rebuild the one he has. Either way, everything fits and works properly.
