[Farmall] cast iron shifter knob

Steel gearshift knobs were used on war era tractors when rubber was in short 
supply.  Other models had them too.

Last weekend, I saw a straight A with a cast iron gear shift knob. Was that 
common on all straight A's or did other models have that feature as well? I 
don't know the year model but did it have anything to do with a war shortage 
of rubber?
