Ralph,

I'll listen to the sounds but I would be surprised if one will be able to pick up any tappet noise.
Usually the rest of the sounds kind of wash everything out on a home video recording.
A possible reason why you need to be so handy with the choke may be that the float is set too low.
The MS carburetor for that tractor doesn't have an accelerator pump like what is often on an
automobile carburetor. On autos/truck that little pump gives an extra shot of gas during changes in
load or a sudden increase in speed is desired. So the MS carburetors have a chamber for some extra
gas through the load nozzle to be available if there is a sudden need for extra fuel. If the float
isn't set correctly, ie, gas level in the carburetor isn't high enough, this extra slug of gas isn't
available.

However, since this tractor sets around w/o being used much, the small holes in the Load Nozzle may
be plugged or partially plugged. It is best to run the tractor empty by shutting the gas off and
then letting it run until it runs out of gas. Usually there is also a drain on the carburetor to
allow the carburetor to be drained completely empty. If this is done when the tractor is stored for
a period of time, then the gas won't gel and mess up the carburetor. I do that on all of my tractors
and any equipment that isn't used often. An example, I have a 5000 watt generator for the house to
backup the power. It can set months w/o being used. I always run it dry when shutting it off. Then I
turn the gas back on when I need it and it usually pops off on the second pull. Have had it for 12
years and have never had to fix anything on it. Always starts good and runs good.

Thanks for the feedback on the "AR" Dean. I had just assumed that this
engine would be pretty well set to specification as my Uncle quite often had
mechanics work on it for various things. The valve noise, if thats what it
is, can be heard quite noticeably in the short video I have. I'll try to get
it somewhere on the net where you or others can listen and offer their
opinions. This tractor runs reasonably well considering all the time it has
spent in storage for the past 8 years. Carburetor is a little off and I have
to have a hand on the choke button any time I engage the clutch or else it
will stall.
