One of my Oliver mounted cultivators has a rather interesting option on it.
This cultivator was probably made locally to us here in Central Coastal
California, as it uses the John Deere "T-bar" tool standard mounting system,
but was made for the Oliver frame style on the Fleetline/Super series
tractors. The oprion is that by removing the pins on the T-bars, then we can
put in place a Bean-cutter for front mounted bean harvest. This was a handy
feature and not terrifically rare here because in the 1940's to 1960's there
were large amounts of Dry edible beans and also Snap Beans for seed raised
in California. It was VERY efficient to change to the cutter after the last
front cultivation of the Beans and then use this cutter to first cut the
roots of the Onions and then the Dry Beans whether for seed or eating. Then
change the cutter back out to cultivate Cauliflower, Cabbage and other cool
weather crops.
I have only tried using the cutter once - it works well, but currently
I grow the Onions on a different bed size so we just use the tractor for
cultivating only.

Grant,

I wish I had more to add to this discussion, but I really don't. All I can
say is it appears that all the tractor mounted cultivators I have ever seen,
either in person, or in a photograph all looked the same, regardless of
where in the country they were located. About the only thing that would be
different would be the type of shovel they used (depending on the crop?). I
really don't know for sure.

Enjoy, Joe

Well, I am not in the Midwest and have no John Deere antique tractors, so I
m not a candidate for trying to take advantage of Joe's kind offer. BUT,
nd this is a really big BUT, I have a very strong interest in cultivating
rrangements as we use them for growing all of our vegetables! So, perhaps
his is a key to start a discussion of cultivating tools and practices?
By the way, both the Farmall 240 that I got about a month ago and the
ate (crossbars type) grill Oliver 770 that I just got Wednesday Night have
ront mount belly type cultivators mounted that we will be using a lot. The
70 I finished loading at about 9PM and then did a 2 hour drive back to the
anch, followed by unloading it the the next morning (yesterday.) At the
oment those multiple nights with less than 3.5 hours of sleep are catching
p with me. I think the cultivator on the Oliver 770 is a local Salinas
alley shop built unit, but I think the Farmall 240 cultivator may be a
actory unit. I wonder how I can tell? I'll try to contribute more on this
iscussion soon, I need to get an electrical unit installed now.

Speaking of CCA cultivators, is anyone in the midwest interested in one? I
ad all new shovels put on mine about 15 years ago, used it one time, and it
as been setting in my field ever since. It might as well be used by
omeone. I'm in central Michigan, can take some photos of it if you would
ike.
Enjoy, Joe

hank you very much, Dean! That provides exactly what I needed to know. I
ew that what was on there wasn't right as the links were too wide. Since
at chain finally broke, I want to replace it with the proper chain.

 Al,
I've sent you the JD Parts Catalog for the JD CC-A Cultivator via private
email. As far as I can
discern there is only one chain JD JD2050 which apparently JD still sells
lengths of this chain to
order.

I'd like to know what size chain is supposed to run from the wheels to the
shaft and from the shaft
to the manual lift mechanism on my JD CCA manual lift cultivator. I
inherited the cultivator but the
manual was lost in the house fire years ago.
