John, this list is EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Thank you. And your comment about fixing up whichever is the better of the two is just what I planned. I have already spotted some of the points you have made...some on the original SA of mine and some on Billy's. Also, I THINK mine may have had an engine change...still cannot find a serial number on the block, and the casting date is blocked from view.
Do you live in the RDU area? Interested in doing an analysis of the two Super A's? I'm looking forward to this Sunday when I plan to pick up the "new" SA. I can't wait to study both of them. Maybe I will even see about rebuilding the engine if it is the better one...we'll see...just might be time to learn how!
Anyway, if you have nothing better to do, you are welcome to visit and give me your opinions/suggestions!
Dale Finch
PS Maybe we should vote YOU to plan and host a "SUPER A, et al-FEST"!

All I know is he said it broke the crank while mowing grass. I've been
riends with the seller for over 15 years. I was interested in it to fix up
or re-sale but the asking price was too high to turn a profit. If you get
tumped on something, ask away, plenty of folks on the list that are usually
uiet until someone asks for help.
I don't know the shape of your project tractor but unless something is
pecial about that one, I'd fix up whichever one is in the best shape. If
his is a restoration then you may want to find out which one has all the
orrect parts. Most of these tractors have been modified slightly from when
hey left the assembly line. Usually the steering has been updated (ball
oints), kerosene manifolds have been replaced, water pumps added, Fast
itches or 3 pt sometimes added, and sometimes a seat off a 140 has been
dded. Most have had a pipe or piece of angle iron welded to the rod
onnecting the rear lift arms to the hydraulic reservoir--engineering weak
oint.
Here are some things to look for to help you decide which components to
se; damaged final drive housings including shafts and bearings,
ransmission seals that leaked and got the brakes, worn out steering
earboxes. Watch out for heli-coils or nuts welded to the steering housing
here the cultivator arms mount. Check the oil pan for dents from the
ultivator. Check the left fender where it bolts to the transmission for
ust out---riding a sack of fertilizer to make a round tended to greatly
ccelerate this problem. Don't be surprised if you pull a final drive
ousing and find the brake drum has run loose and ruined itself, the shaft,
nd damaged the transmission housing or right axle extension. I won't go
nto 12 volt conversions. Check the front axle spindles for
reaks/repairs----not a big problem on A's compared to Cubs. The steering
haft support can get really worn. Seat springs may be broken and welded.
ook for grease leaks around the PTO and belt pulley--could be a sign of a
roove worn in the shaft, not just a bad seal.Check the hydraulic line
etween the pump and reservoir--not uncommon to find one that has been
epaired. The right brake pedal tends to show a lot of wear in the pivot.
heck this stuff out when you have time.

Yes, it did! Do you know anything about it's history? Should I fix it
instead of parting it? The problem is, the parts to repair it cost more
than the tractor can be sold for, and I certainly can't afford a THIRD
tractor. I would have to find ANOTHER parts tractor!!!

Dale, did your parts tractor come from Person Co.? If so it was probably
one
friend of mine was selling.
