[AT] allis implement jack

Dad has a really old Allis hay rake that we use a couple times a year. It still has the original tongue jack. The last 2 times we have gone to use it, the jack has failed resulting in dropping the tongue on the ground. How reliable were these jacks? Basically there are 2 pieces inside that alternate pinching a round rod. I'm debating making an oversize shaft or just buying a modern style jack. Thoughts?
