This is my opinion. Avoid the stuff from TSC and other farm stores. It
is low priced for a reason; hard to get a shine, durability, etc. They
generally take out the UV protectors in the paints sold in these places.
They fade and check fairly quick. Go to your Agco dealer and get the
paint they sell for Oliver green. Also get some hardener. If you are
going to go through the effort to make the tractor look half was decent,
why not have it last for a little while longer. The paint from the Agco
dealers will probably run in the neighborhood of $50 to $60 per gallon.
You can get hardener for synthetic enamel at an automotive paint supply
place for about $15/pt. Don't pay the $36 dollars that they want from
the ag dealerships for Valspar Renu hardener. I restore tractors for a
living. I use the paints from different tractor dealerships. They work
good and hold up good. I have also painted with $400/gal paint.
However, for a field tractor you don't want to use that.

The key to a good looking paint job is the preparation done before
spraying the primer and paint. Use a good sealing primer also. That
will help with the durability of the paint.

Olivers

I need to paint at least one of my 5 Green Olivers (as opposed to the
Oliver 550 that was a Navy tractor and so is painted a wierd Blue and
Gray). I am looking at the options out there as far as brands and
wondering which is the best paint that is basic machinery enamel to use.
This is NOT for making a concours paint job, it is to place the tractor
in the field and make the operator proud enough to take care of the
tractor.... I see paint varying from $30-45 per gallon for the Meadow
Green and around $15 a quart for the Clover White. Any tips? Thanks
