[AT] More on pump, now $150 scan tool

This is what I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Actron-CP9180-AutoScanner-Diagnostic-Capability/dp/B00
0KG8KB0/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1290127684&sr=8-8

It is $110 right now, free shipping. But it only does 1996 and newer
(ODBII). Older ones require a different scan tool. And a different tool
for each make. It does do most everything that Steve mentions below.

If you need to do everything, this one would probably work, but it is $250
http://www.amazon.com/Actron-CP9190-AutoScanner-Diagnostic-Scanner/dp/B000KG
CUMA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1290128075&sr=1-1

The are certainly not factory scan tools like a GM Tech2 ($5000), or even a
Snap-On professional scan tool ($1800), but they will allow you to fix 98%
of the problems you might have with your own car.

There are a LOT of code readers and budget scan tools out there these
days. From hand held through PC based versions. One thing you will want
if you actually intend to do repairs is a tool that can show you live
data from the ECM. Some do many don't. Without it you can read and clear
codes, maybe see the freeze frame data. With it you can watch many items
that will let you dig in and actually do repairs without a lot of extra
work.

Also for anyone who does have a code scanner or even a scan tool, for
those on the list I will gladly look up trouble codes, TSBs, and common
repair problems on vehicles, As long as you keep in mind that long
distance diagnosis all depends on the description of the problem. Just
posting that your 1999 Dodge is making a funny noise isn't a good
description....
