I had a similar problem with a '57 - turned out to be rust in the gas tank.  Had to take the sediment bulb off and flush it.  Try to keep it full of gas to limit the chances for rust.  (if that is indeed the problem).

1949 Cub. Was cutting grass with the belly mower. Going up a slight incline and 
he motor died. Will not crank back up. Not with the starter or the hand crank. 
ny suggestions?
