Disc plows were used a lot here in Montana to summerfallow,  before farmers 
learned to use duckfoot  machinery
to work the soil by leaving some stubble on top to prevent erosion.
In this arid climate in Eastern Montana there's not enough rainfall to raise 
a crop on the same field every year.
Hope that's worded right enouh for people to understand. And land was cheap 
enough then to do that
