Plastigauge is a pliable commercial material to allow measurement of how much clearance there is in
the bearings to determine if standard or oversized are needed or if the crankshaft is out of round.
Or if sufficiently large the crankshaft needs to be reground. The calibrated width of the
plastigauge after compression determines the actual clearance. Used properly it can be a pretty good
indication but can be misleading if not applied properly. Filing down the rod cap or inserting check
blanks under the insert bearings were trick used to reduce the bearing clearance rather than doing
it properly by using new insert bearing or re-babbiting.

Did they have this plastigage back in 1939??? What did the original repairs
call for?? Sounds like overkill. Isn't this when people used belts from
their pants, for bearing to get by?? I am too old:))
my 2 cents.
