He is preselecting....not a good practice or habit to get into......
Could lose a good transmission or drive shaft doing that.....

It's basically a 5 speed with a 2 gear set on the tail shaft.
The big button puts you in low range.  you shift 5 if you need them all. 
Then flip the big button and the red button rearward and you are in direct. 
You go back to 2nd gear (of the 5) in direct, then flip the red button 
forward to overdrive then back to the rear with the red button and pull the 
lever into 3 rd which is 8th speed, then forward on the button release and 
depress the fuel pedal and let it shift into 9th speed...............
