I just got  to look at this thread  and  I aint sure if  anyone's mentioned 
this:   on Combines they use hydrostats.
 
    they are to be ran at  FULL Rpm's to get max  torque---  they will 
stall out  if you don't  and  that  generates more heat than  the pump  would.   
  
   We've had  hydrostat mowers since 1970  and  have stalled  it out with 
our garden tiller IF we didn't run it at max  engine RPM's.
