Bring # 1 cylinder to the top of it's compression stroke.
The rotor should line up with the # 1 spark plug wire.
Take the magneto out and rotate it 180 degrees, put it back in and try to
start it.
If it is out of timing it can only be 180 dgrees out.

murphy's law has struck me again.
i tried to do as directed but must have bumped the mag
and made it move.

it is harder now to turn over and on one try, it refused to crank.

the battery was just freshly charged.

it seems like the impulse mechanism is making more noise. i didn't use to
hear it when starting with the starting motor.

i guess she's out of time

i think she would prefer a professional's touch.

Do EXACTLY as John said and your timing will end up right back where it is 
now.  Don't take any shortcuts.
