Rupert, along the way try to get a look at NE Oregon--mostly n. of I 
-84.  N. of La Grande is the Grande Ronde valley (farm land and some 
small towns that lay between two mountain ranges).  From there you 
could head N. into E. Wash. and W. through more nice country clear to 
the Pacific.  The eastern part of both states (E. of the Cascade 
Range) is the "drier" part of the states (my favorite).  Not a lot of 
tourist traps around.     John Wilkens
