Charlie,  when I was a kid our winters were pretty cold with the ground 
froze for days if not weeks at a time.  Over the last 20 or 30 years the 
winters have been milder with some years of no ground freeze at all but 
overall average temps haven't changed much.  I think the cycle is reversing 
now.  We had cold weather earlier this year and we've already had more cold 
weather than we had winter before last for the whole winter.  However, we 
still haven't had the rivers freeze over in the last 15 or 20 years.  If 
that's global warming I like it!
