[Farmall] Cub experts

Just for a reference, here is a picture of the dash panel I am referring to.
The first impression I got when I saw the first one was that it was
home-made.

However, we have located about a dozen or more of these. All identical and
all of them on '48 cubs. The serial number range we have documented so far
is from 38571 to 40000. If everything within that range had this altered or
as we refer to it as "trimmed" dash I think we would be seeing more of them
than we can account for right now.
So I am looking for some information to try to determine a couple of
things. First of all, we are trying to identify the actual full range of
serial numbers where these were used and secondly, we would like to know if
there are tractors within the range - 38571 - 40000 that have the standard
long ear dash that was in use up until mid 49.
Any information anyone can shed on this will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully Guy Fay will jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong but I think
the "9" in "R92" indicates
that it's an assembly rather than a single part. In the case of something
like a dash panel, it could have
had stiffeners or brackets spot welded to it or something along those lines.

IH usually didn't give the option of ordering the older version.
The new part would replace the old for function.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "R92" would imply that the drawing for
he 354912R92 panel has gone through 92 revisions without the part number
eing changed (the first version of the part would have been 354912R1).
hat's how a lot of the government drawings that we deal with are
umbered, especially the older ones from back in the M48 and M60 days. The
asic drawing number in this case would be 354912. You add the revision
umber to the end of the part so you have the flexibility of ordering
lder style parts when you don't need all the revisions/improvements
ncorporated, or if for some reason you can't use the latest part.
ometimes after several revisions/improvements parts don't remain totally
etrofitable into old equipment. It's one of the bigger problems we have
ere with making things better for the army without affecting
nterchangeability between vehicle platforms. When the improvements become
oo drastic, we assign a new part number and start the revision process
ll over with the new part.
If this is correct the 351508R2 had a very short life, since it apparently
nly went through one revision before being replaced. Probably not very
any went into production. In fact I would guess that just after it went
nto production, somebody realized a major concern/issue with the panel as
t was, and a total redesign was started right away. Cubs that had already
hipped were probably retrofitted at the dealer or were just left alone.
oubt if there was a recall effort to make sure all the shipped Cubs had
n improved 354912 series panel.
