Now days I just pick up some cans of Rust Check from Canadian Tire when I
make a trip to visit my buddy in Ontario and do the same thing. This is an
aerosol can of thin pink oil. It really helps in fighting off the rust.

I used to do a similar undercoating to my pickup in the fall in hopes of 
preventing some of the rust from road salt. Probabaly a bit of a health 
hazard though as I used to use the cleaning nozzle on the air compressor to 
spray a fine mist of oil and no doubt breathed in  a bit of oil vapour 
myself in the process. :-(
