[AT] Spam> Hello- NOW SNOW

Paul you reminded me of something that happened to me a few years back. I
was headed back home from MD and had gotten off of the interstate onto US 70
4 lane headed toward home. I was about 60 miles from home, it was getting
dark and the snow had been getting worse all the way home. One of the two
east bound lanes was clear. The other (inside lane) had about 2 inches of
slush on it. All of a sudden I was behind a caravan of cars going about 20
mph in a relatively clear and dry lane. I didn't really have time to do
that since conditions were headed down hill and a couple of hours left to
get home at a safe speed.

I kept looking at the slushy passing lane and decided to give it a try. I
moved over there driving a front wheel drive Buick and a guy fell in behind
me in a Chevy Suburban. We were going 30 or a little better with no
problem and I was closing in on the lead car in the caravan when I saw who
it was. None other than a NC Highway Patrol Trooper. Well it was too late
to be bashful. I wasn't speeding and I hadn't lost control at all so I kept
going and the Suburban stayed right behind me.
We got past the trooper and got back in the cleared lane with no problem and
he didn't bother us but I was well aware that I better not slip and slide in
the ditch after I got past him. That is unless I wanted to spend the night
in the Wayne Co. NC jail.

Having just got back from AZ, I was pleased to see how much snow removal
equipment they had in AZ, NM, and OK, It still took 2 days to cover 900 mi
from OK City to IN, but my night vision on ice, just is not what it used to
be. Going down, OK had a LOT of snow, but as Ceil says, most of it gone on
way back. Rain, snow and freezing temps make interesting problems for the
DOT. The public want it cleared NOW, and they expect to drive as on dry
pavement. The only trucks I saw in the ditch were in IN. Coming across TX,
we just caravanned, no one in a hurry, no passing, plenty of space ... 95%
professional drivers, and not a bad drive, even at night.

I did get to meet and visit Ken while in AZ
