I think I have come to agree with Charlie - a mechanic at a repair shop 
was disassembling a piece of machinery, found the deformed spring, and 
tossed it in the general direction of the waste can. It missed and 
bounced over to where my tractor was being serviced and wound up in the 
oil pan that was lying on the floor. From seeing the way the mechanics 
operated at the New Holland dealership where I worked, that is a very 
likely story.

I am pretty sure that the Cub doesn't use a camshaft retaining spring. 
As near as I can tell, aside from valve springs, the only compression 
springs in the C-60 engine are the oil pressure control valve spring 
(which is much larger), and the governor bumper spring (which is much 
smaller).
