[AT] computers OT

I am 68, Dick, and have gone through a LOT of "upgrades" since the
1980's. Some were better than others, some not so great. I have 5
machines now running Windows 7 (only because I got two 3-packs cheap)
and the rest still running Windows XP and a couple running Linux. While
the user interface of 7 is a little prettier and the help screen a
little more useful than XP, I am not overly impressed with 7. The hard
drive space needed is huge, and the hardware requirements can be
daunting if you have an older machine. I had to find new audio cards and
video cards from my "inventory" (milk crates full of cards I pulled out
of dead PC's that I was given or scavenged from dumpsters) to get one
machine running. I just do this for fun, but if I were serious about my
computing, I would just go to Linux - the price is right (free), and
Linux will run on almost anything. I happen to like Ubuntu, but they are
all pretty much the same.

On the other hand, since your new machine came with Windows 7 already
installed, I think the best thing to do is grit your teeth and learn to
live with it. There are a few good "learning Windows 7" books available
that might help you feel more comfortable with the system.
