You're going to have to break the jam nut free in order to remove the set 
screw. You don't have to totally remove the jam nut, just break it free 
and then you should be able to remove the set screw. Have you tried using 
an extension with the socket that is long enough to allow you to use the 
ratchet? Maybe two extension might be needed.

Don't quite understand how you can't get the ratchet on the socket, but 
you can get the vise grips on it. I would think the vise grips would need 
more space.
