[AT] What's the "rarest" tractor you own?

My great-grandfather and grandfather had a steam powered sawmill from the late 1800's until the depression.

In the 20's they bought a Fordson locomotive from the Skagit company in Washington to haul logs to the sawmill from the woods. They had about 2 miles of wood track going up into the woods. When I was a kid you could still find some parts of the wood track, but I think all traces of it are pretty much gone now.

Skagit converted the Fordson into a 4 wheel drive unit that had large castiron flanged wheels with rubber tread for running on wood timber rails. From what I understand, Skagit only made a couple engines like this. The ones you often see in old tractor books about logging show a Fordson with concave wheels for running on logs.

Imagine a regular train track, but replace the steel rails with 6x6 wood rails.

I'll try to load a picture or two on my webserver tonight.

George

I never realized there were any wood rails? When/where were they used? I
thought they were iron from the beginning?

<<snip>> Man, if we could come up with a Fordson with the wood rail wheels,
we'd probably cut down some trees and run it in the woods on our
grounds!
