Steel would be stronger than cast iron and less likely to crack under impact loading than a cast part. If the original was cast iron, it was probably done that way to save $$. It is usually cheaper to produce a casting that is very close to the finished part and do a small amount of machining than to take a chunk of steel and mill out a finished part. I would use a piece of 3/4" x 2" cold finished C11L17 or similar and NOT a piece of hot rolled flat stock to start with. 1018 would be OK but C11L17 machines a lot better.

Subject: [AT] CASE IH 235 60" Blade holder?

 Hello,

I've been asked to reproduce a CASE IH 235 60" blade holder. Its about 2
3/8" long, 1 7/8" wide, 1/4 thick, and has sides that are 3/4 high, I have a
mill and some steel stock and I could do it...

But, I believe it is cast iron and I'm not sure if making it out of steel
would be safe? I don't like to alter high speed blade engineering...

I would rather find an original replacement for this part.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Will
