[AT] Trailer safety chains?

I have a coupla trailers with chains that are a little too long; found I can
shorten them by "twisting them" a few turns.

If it were me, I would make them long enough to reach the connection 
points but still be about 3-4" off the ground when hooked up - you don't 
want them dragging on the pavement in normal operation.
