Some of the more interesting ads from the (free to
subscribers) Mailbox Markets section of the weekly Lancaster (PA) 
Farming newspaper for 10/10/2009. [my comments, if any, are in brackets]
Sorry about the day's delay, but we took a little vacation at the NJ 
shore last week, and I got behind in my correspondence. While we were 
down there, several Amish families came down in a small bus driven by an 
"English" (their term for anyone not Amish). All the adults were covered 
from head to toe, but the kids were less formal and having a great time. 
I guess they like to come down when there are few people so they won't 
be stared at or made fun of. As they were leaving the beach, we could 
hear them talking from the deck of our apartment. My wife asked me what 
language they were speaking - it wasn't "American". I explained that 
they spoke a form of German that dated back to the 1700's, with some 
English terms thrown in for things that didn't exist back then. My 
father used to refer to it as "Plotdeutch". The reason I mention this is 
because you often see ads in "Mailbox Markets" that use poor spelling, 
and you can usually figure that ad is by an Amish whose English is his 
second language. MS
