Farmer,

In New England they would make a walkway to the barn (if it was not  
connected to the house by a shed or series of sheds).  The walk way  
would have a roof that overhung enough to keep most snow out of the  
thing, and walls up to waist height.

If the barn caught on fire you could drive the tractor through it to  
keep the fire out of the house.
