Farmer -

I think you're correct. I recall my dad telling me about my grandparents 
making birch beer. Since we just tapped for maple syrup, I never knew if it 
was derived from birch sap. Back then, sugaring was a pretty basic task, 
using spiles and hanging the lidded sap buckets. My job as a kid was 
fetching the buckets and hanging them on the spiles as dad & my brother 
tapped the trees.
