Subject: [Farmall] New Old Tractor!

For a long time, I have wanted to "one day" own a big IH tractor from the
60's or 70's. Something in the 56 or 66 series, like an 856, a 766, 966,
or 1066. Back almost a month ago, a friend sent me a link to an 856 for
sale about 2 hrs. away in Washington, NC. Come to find out, it was a
friend of mine, he had even told me about buying the tractor last year "in
a pinch" while his regular tractor was down! Another friend that has been
an IH man all his life went and looked at it for me, it started without
ether when the temp was below 28-30 degrees. Long story short, my friend
delivered the 856 for me Friday. It's a 1969 model, and for 40 years old,
it looks good. Straight tin, excellent front tires, worn rear tires, a set
of hub mount duals and 1000 lbs. of suitcase weights on the front!

As soon as the weather opens, I am going to try it out in the field! When
I went to see it before I signed the check, it had a ditch bank mower
hooked to it, so it's basically "field ready." IT has typical 40 year old
tractor issues--a few minor leaks and seeps--front end is a tad loose but
not bad--gauges all have issues--gearshifts are a little loose but very
good compared to some I have seen. My goal is to give it an easy life of
chore use, and eventually restore it to its original glory.....

You feel 10' tall and bulletproof in the seat!!

The only bad news: I am out of shed room, and my savings account has taken
a butt-whoopin from the 856 purchase. I have a nice 1957 Farmall 450 that
will have to leave me. Got it up for sale but no takers yet. If anyone
knows of someone wanting a good 450 gas, fast hitch, near 'bout new tires
on the back, good tach, showes 31XX hrs, etc. let me know....

A
