  If the cable gets dry it catches on the tube and that causes the cable to 
  snap forward when the torque builds up a little, which it what you're 
  seeing at the needle end. Pull the cable and run it between your fingers 
  several times to see if one of the wire strands hasn't broken. One broken 
  strand will also make the cable catch on the tube and snap forward when 
  the torque builds up a little. If there is a broken strand, replace the 
  cable. Trying to cut off the broken strand only delays the inevitable 
  replacement. On some of the replacement cable kits you get a universal 
  cable with a glue on tip. You cut the cable to length and attach the tip. 
  Make sure that the length is right. If you make it too long it will also 
  drag in the tube and cause the needle to be off and/or jump. You'll also 
  eventually wear out the cable and tube. Go on-line and see if you can 
  determine what the actual length of the cable should be. If you're not the 
  original owner you might just have a cable that replaced with the wrong 
  length by the previous owner.
