Another option that might work would be to put the ring spanner over  
the pipe, then put the strainer on to hold it in the right alignment,  
tighten the big nut on the pipe, then remove the strainer to get the  
spanner off, then put the strainer back on.

I think the 3 sump bolts at the back of the engine were even more  
awkward - particularly the middle one. Probably would be easier if I  
had a 1/4" drive universal joint I guess.
