Mike---I think for sure you should not use a dropping resistor with the
electronic ignition. The Pertroix is designed for the full battery voltage
and takes care of the switching.
For a dropping resistor why not just ask Ford/New Holland for the proper
value. There are many heavy wattage wire wound units available at little
cost.
