Try a one color mouse pad. I have one large computer desk (with 3
Linux boxes on it) that has a highly figured wood grain surface (fake
dark oak). It drives an optical mouse nuts... Another desk with fake
light maple print and it doesn't bother them.  Sometimes a sheet of
lined notebook paper will mess one up too. Plaid would not make a good
optical mouse pad.   :-)
