Ralph, MANY THANKS!  You hit the nail on the head!  I took your 
suggestion and simply blew on the laser lens and solved the jittery 
mouse problem.  Must have had lint or dust on it.  Thanks to all the 
rest of you who responded also.  Great bunch for support!    John W.
