Several years ago when I installed our woodburner I laid up a brick hearth
and backwall. I got used bricks from a mid-1800's church that was being
dismantled. I gave 3 cents apiece for bricks as they describe here. Times
sure have changed!

In St. Louis they are having a problem with people knocking down old
buildings that are abandoned, or sometimes in the process of being
remodeled, in order to steal the old bricks. They are then taken to New
Orleans where they are cleaned, rebaked, and used in rebuilding old
buildings that were damaged in Katrina.
