Larry, when I saw the photo I was immediately reminded of visiting "Historic 
Williamsburg VA" this fall.  In a couple of the buildings you can tour there 
are similar fireplaces and in fact they were cooking in them when we toured. 
I'd love to have a big fireplace like that (as long as I had some help 
cutting the wood).

That's a wonderful European fireplace, Mattias.  It's rare in modern 
construction to find a fireplace of that size and practicality in the US. 
As a result, it's difficult for our children to relate to stories like 
Cinderella.  It's hard to visualize that a fireplace could be large enough 
to actually get inside of it to tend the fire, heat the metal, and cook the 
food.  The ones we still have around us are generally in 18th century 
buildings that are noted for historical importance.
