I think it would have been worth a shot in Karl's situation too. I have heard of guys unsticking the piston on antique 1 cylinder engines using electrolysis. 

As it disolves the rust it aparently does penetrate in between the two parts. I freed up the turnbuckle adjuster on a brinly plow (part looks like?a small 3pt hitch top link) very easily without heat.

I had really good luck with electrolysis on an F-20 clutch assembly that  the 
mice had gotten into and converted it into one big rusted chunk.   Everything 
was salvageable except one spring that was too far gone.  I even  was able to 
put new lining on the clutch plate.  All the bolts came loose  as well.  I 
had to let it "cook" for two days, but it really did the job. I  really didn't 
expect it to work, but I felt I had nothing to loose.
