The water you see in the Cub photos is a water curtain which absorbed dust
and overspray. In the Cub days, they did wear masks.

Looking at the images that Guy and Jim pointed us to, it appears that
the painting area had some powerful overhead fans sucking fumes upward.
Without those, I don't think the painters would have lasted a week, let
alone many years.
