Farmer,

We moved onto 20 acres in September that is mostly open field. It had  
been neglected for at least two years and was high in milkweed and  
goldenrod.  We found some folks nearby who cut and baled it for their  
cows.  (We have no hay equipment at all.)    They were quite happy  
with the hay they got, but it apparently would not have been good for  
our two ponies.  They predict quite good hay from the land this  
summer.   My goal for this Spring is to brush hog the weeds down in  
the areas they did not cut to get more usable hay.  We will be turning  
out our 15 or so sheep onto sections of it to help with the weeds and  
feed the sheep.

During this winter, the two ponies and the sheep come and go from the  
barn to one pasture pretty much at will.  I'm getting a feel for the  
weather that they'll go out in and when they'd rather be inside.  In  
the Spring we'll have to limit the turnout for the ponies because at  
least one of them can't get too much to eat.

You really can count the ribs on that one!  I'm glad the horse is now  
in good hands.
