That's exactly right, Charlie.  Williamsburg, the historic plantations along the James and York rivers, Mt. Vernon, and some of the other historical colonial buildings are about the only places where you can see those practical fireplaces in the US that are commonplace in north-central Europe.
 
I'm used to seeing them all over Poland in the castles and palaces located there.  (My son has been living in Poland since 1991, and we visit with him at least once per year.)  I don't know how old the design is, but it was commonplace by the end of the 13th century.
