The rust (FeO) is actually ionized and electrically separated from the iron  
(Fe).  The advantage of this approach over sandblasting is that only the  rust 
is removed.  With sandblasting, the sand can't tell the difference  between 
rust and iron and it's hard to remove the rust in the pits..
