[AT] Trailer brakes

I'm in need of a good transmission for an 89 GMC 2wd 1/2 ton. It's my Dad's
and the trans went out last Sunday on the way to our cabin to go deer
hunting. He was towing a trailer in OD and about 90 miles from home the
trans decided that was enough and started slipping in Drive. It'll go in the
low gears but it slips once it gets to Drive. The trans shop quoted him
$800-$1000 to completely rebuild and I don't think he wants to spend the
money on the truck which has 180k+ on it and he's had since new. Anyone know
what trans is used in that truck? I'm guessing a 700R4? What other years
will interchange? If I can find a good used trans I might fix it up for my
soon to be driving oldest son.
Mark
