There is a liquid thread sealant from Loctite that is used to seal hydraulic
fittings and it works very well. It contains no solids so it can safely be
used without contamination of the hydraulic fluid.

Hydraulic hoses are supposed to be the type of threads that make a dry seal
so no compound is necessary. The threads are shaped so high pressure fluid
can't spiral along the helix and leak out.
