There is a liquid thread sealant from Loctite that is used to seal hydraulic 
fittings and it works very well. It contains no solids so it can safely be 
used without contamination of the hydraulic fluid.

Hydraulic hoses are supposed to be the type of threads that make a dry seal 
so no compound is necessary. The threads are shaped so high pressure fluid 
can't spiral along the helix and leak out.
