Dick,
 This used to be true but due to the Continental parts going sky high in the
last couple years they are getting really expensive. A decent G to start
with will run you more than $1,500.00. A good friend of mine owns a machine
shop and has built more than a few engines in the last couple years and
parts are drying up. Pistons and valves will break you. Check with someone
like Norm or Roger Van Camp to see what's happened.

I restored a G several years ago and enjoyed every moment of the restoration
process.  It's small enough to man-handle, the parts are available and
except for some Continental engine parts, they are not expensive.  I have to
say that the G was the most fun to work on of the tractors I've restored. 
They are also a blast to drive :)

May I suggest one of the most popular of antique tractors, an Allis
Chalmers "G".
Less than 30,000 mfged from 1949 to 1955.
The only rear engined tractor at that time.
Easy to handle, weighs approx 1500#.
Easy to haul, can be hauled in a Dodge Dakota with extended cab and 6 1/2'
bed.
Their equipment was specially designed for mounting and use only on the G.
A frequent progression among Allis G enthusiasts is to acquire a tractor,
restore the tractor, then acquire a piece of equipment (cultivator,
moldboard plow, disc plow, sickle bar mower, belly mower (mfged by others -
Bush Hog, Woods, Sun Mfg), etc.   Then restore that piece of equipment, and
move on to another piece of equipment.
