[Farmall] 140 Steering Problem

1st thing I would do is set the toe in on the front wheels, if the toe in is correct it should go straight down the road, you can have play in the steering gear etc,but the tractor should still go straight and wheels should not wobble. I normally set it for about a 1/8" a little more wear might require 1/4". Measure either front or back side walls of the tires then rotate the wheels 180 degrees and measure again, front should be 1/8 to 1/4" less than rear measurement.

Al,
Thats what I'm thinking as well.  Tie rods seem good.  Wish I didn't spend $200.00 on new tires, as the old bald ones didn't do this as more surface was on th ground.  Oh well, Thats why I've named this one "THE MONEY PIT"  LOL

The 140 should be factory equipped with "car" type tie rods.  Most likely
your problem is the sector gear keyways are worn and the gear is slipping
on the sector shaft which the center steering arm connects to.

worn.  The ball or, more likely, the pieces that fit against the ball, can
be worn.  There is someone in Red Power that advertises new pieces for
them.  I would look there before looking into the steering box.

Putting the finishing touches on a Farmall 140 and had new tires put on
last week.  Now I can;tdrive due to very sloppy play in the steering.
anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what to adjust or look for?  Looking
at the breakdown, steering gear is very pricy for my local IH dealer.  I
have pulled the steering shaft and the "worm gear" looks ok.  Having
trouble getting into the steering box.  Can't seem to get the steering arm
off.  Will try to find a puller in the morning and see if that will help.
