I'm pretty sure the two types will interchange, but the terminals are just arranged differently. Just don't use the "L" terminal.
On my 149 (reg under seat) it has adapter terminals to convert from screw to spade terminals.

Anybody know of a source for Cub Cadet regulators that won't break the bank? 
Dealers are charging over $70. We have found NAPA has the ones for the 60's 
models with the regulator under the hood but can't supply the ones that are 
mounted under the seat. I found a partshouse that thought they could but the 
regulator was almost $80 from them.

It is quite unfortunate but there are plenty of these old mowers being put 
to pasture because the parts have become outrageous.
