I've seen their equipment in the local hardware stores. The small tank

You might look at Water Boss - http://www.waterboss.com/index.shtml
They are more of a DIY solution but seem to be made for rural water.
Supposedly, it can handle a high sediment load. I've had 2 (sold one in
the mobile home where it was installed). One downside is a small salt
tank. Unfortunately, now your pipes are full of junk, so the water may
still pick up some of the old iron after passing thru the softener.
