John,

It seems to me that a nice clean battery terminal and a handy wrench  
to undo the thing would accomplish the same thing, and not be too much  
trouble every 6 months or so.  Around here, I see lots of farm  
equipment that gets used only once a year for some weeks.

Speaking of combines:
I visited Kansas some years ago (in the middle of their best-ever  
wheat harvest).  The harvesters are specialist contractors that roll  
over the countryside from south to  north as the harvest time moves  
and are scheduled way in advance.  I was told that they buy fleets of  
brand new combines at some $million and a half EACH every year and  
sell them off when the season is done.  I guess dependability is very  
very high on their requirements list.
